History in motion — an atlas you can rewind
WhenAtlas is an interactive atlas of history. Turn the dial of time and the world moves with it: borders rise and fall, battles unfold phase by phase, ideas and inventions land where they were made — across space, across time, across themes, in one continuous view.
Most history sites are articles with an occasional map. WhenAtlas starts from the other end: the atlas is the page. Scroll through centuries or zoom into a single year (later down to a month, then a day) without ever leaving the map, and open any point for an original, source-cited article. That same continuous experience is what our videos record — the site is the product, video is its amplifier.
What you can do here today
- Play world scenarios: a guided camera that sweeps through thousands of years of polities and turning points.
- Toggle thematic layers — current world layers cover polities, places and landmark events; military detail (unit symbols, offensive arrows, battle statistics) appears in dedicated war scenarios.
- Search by name, filter by type and time, and jump straight from a result to the moment it happened.
- Climb from a map marker to a full, human-written article with sources, then dive back into the theater mode for a narrated replay.
- Export any scenario view as a Roam link that reproduces time, camera and layers exactly.
How our content is made
Structured facts (names, dates, coordinates, boundary geometry) come from open datasets — chiefly Cliopatria (CC BY 4.0) and OpenHistoricalMap (CC0) for territory, and Wikidata (CC0) for entities. Every article, however, is written and edited by our editorial team against those sources: factual anchors are kept verbatim, the narrative around them is original prose reviewed paragraph by paragraph before an entity is published, and each page lists the exact citations it was written against.
Narration in video scenarios is produced from those same source-cited scripts, so voice, captions and page text never tell different stories.
Who is behind WhenAtlas
WhenAtlas is built and maintained by a small, independent team of mapmakers, engineers and history writers publishing from China for a worldwide audience. It carries no investor and no e-commerce; revenue comes only from web advertising (Google AdSense) and the ads on video platforms where our recordings are published.
