Detached Elements of the 4th Panzer Army was the improvised battle group formed for the southern sector of Operation Citadel in July 1943. Rather than a formation with a permanent order of battle, it was assembled from corps and directly attached units of the parent army and used to sustain momentum on the main axis of attack. After the offensive opened on the fifth of July it advanced in a circuitous movement north of Belgorod, following the rail line and the valley of the Donets rather than pushing straight ahead. It met the Soviet Voronezh Front and elements of the 5th Guards Tank Army west of Oboyan, and its rate of advance fell steadily. Around the twelfth of July it was committed to the counter-stroke in the Prokhorovka area and then ground down in an attritional fight; by the third week of July its armoured vehicles and manpower losses were heavy enough that it could no longer sustain the rate of progress required and it was pulled back to prepared positions. This entry is a schematic order-of-battle record. The positions are approximate headquarters-area locations, and the intermediate waypoints of the route are traced from published situation maps purely to convey the direction of the flanking advance.
