Canadian First Army
▶ Explore on the mapThe Canadian First Army, commanded by Lieutenant General Harry Crerar, was activated in Normandy in July 1944 and took over the eastern part of the Allied front, including the Canadian and Polish formations. Its troops had already fought on Juno Beach and in the battle for Caen before the army headquarters was formally established. In August it directed the northern pincer of the Falaise operation, driving south from the Caen plain towards Falaise, and its Polish and Canadian units helped close the pocket at Chambois and Mont Ormel. The army then advanced along the coast towards the Seine. The position shown here is a schematic headquarters-area location tracing the army's front from Juno Beach through Caen to Falaise and the Seine. Its part in closing the Falaise pocket made it one of the key Allied formations of the campaign. It went on to clear the Channel coast and to advance into the Netherlands and Germany.
