V Corps was the American corps that assaulted Omaha Beach on 6 June 1944, under Major General Leonard Gerow. It controlled the 1st and 29th Infantry Divisions and the follow-up formations landed in the American sector. After the costly first day, the corps worked to expand the Omaha bridgehead, link it with the British sector and drive south towards Saint-Lô. In July it took part in the slow fighting through the hedgerows, and it then formed part of the American effort in the breakout. Its headquarters area moved south with the front as the Allies advanced out of Normandy. The position shown here is a schematic headquarters-area location, following the corps boundary from the Omaha beachhead towards Saint-Lô and the breakout, and does not represent exact unit locations. Its headquarters remained in the American sector for the rest of the Normandy campaign, controlling the formations that pushed the front southwards.
