British 3rd Infantry Division
▶ Explore on the mapThe British 3rd Infantry Division landed on Sword Beach on 6 June 1944, on the easternmost of the five assault beaches, with the task of advancing on Caen. The division got ashore successfully and pushed inland, but its armour was checked short of the city by the German 21st Panzer Division, and Caen would not fall for more than a month. The division held the eastern part of the bridgehead throughout the summer, taking part in the operations around Caen and the Orne. It was among the formations that pressed the German front during the battles of July and August, and it remained in action as the Allies advanced towards the Seine. The positions shown here are schematic and trace the division's general area of operations from Sword Beach towards the Caen sector, not exact unit locations. It later took part in the pursuit beyond the Seine as the German front in the west collapsed.
