Canadian 3rd Infantry Division
▶ Explore on the mapThe Canadian 3rd Infantry Division landed on Juno Beach on 6 June 1944, between the British sectors at Gold and Sword. Despite heavy losses in the first wave, the Canadians pushed further inland on D-Day than any other assault division, reaching the Caen–Bayeux road by evening. The division then fought in the long and costly battle for Caen, including Operation Charnwood and, later, the armoured attacks east of the city. It remained in the line through August and took part in the advance that helped seal the Falaise pocket, one of the decisive operations of the campaign. The positions shown here are schematic and trace the division's general area of operations from Juno Beach towards Caen and the Falaise road, not precise unit locations. Its D-Day advance inland was a point of pride for the Canadian army, and its later battles around Caen were among the costliest fought by Canadian troops in the war.
