The 4th Infantry Division landed on Utah Beach on 6 June 1944, the westernmost of the five Allied assault beaches. A strong current carried its first wave some two kilometres south of the intended landing point, into a less heavily defended sector, and the division was able to push inland quickly with comparatively light casualties. It then turned north to help seal off the Cotentin peninsula and took part in the capture of Cherbourg at the end of June, the first major port the Allies secured. Through July and August the division fought southwards through the hedgerow country towards Saint-Lô and beyond, taking part in the American breakout and the advance across France. Its experience on D-Day was unusual in that the error in navigation worked to its advantage. The positions shown here are schematic, tracing the division's headquarters area from the beachhead to the breakout, and are intended to show the general axis of advance rather than precise unit locations.
